Find the Children
About Find the Children
Find the Children is a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding missing children. It was founded in 1983 by the late television producer, Linda Otto. Linda launched Find the Children to promote communication between local and federal law enforcement, the media, and the parents of abducted children.
Linda produced the film, “Adam,” which aired on television in 1983. The movie portrayed the story about the kidnapping and murder of Adam, the son of her friend John Walsh. At the end of the movie, photos of missing children played on the screen. As a result, several of the children were found. This was the first time media was used to find missing children.
You can watch the original movie “Adam” (1983) and the sequel “Adam His Song Continues” (1986) on many of the Streaming services.

School Outreach Programs
1 Million Children Educated
Since 1998, Find the Children has provided free safety programs to students in schools throughout Los Angeles County.
Find the Children is the only organization in the country that provides free stranger and online safety programs that provide valuable safety lessons to children in preschool, elementary, and middle school.
Our age appropriate presentations are conducted in grade-level classrooms by Find the Children’s outreach speakers, who are highly trained and have lots of experience with children of all ages. Our programs teach children to recognize potentially dangerous situations and know how to keep themselves safe, when an adult is not present.
Preschool Program
Our safety program is designed for children 3 to 5 years of age, it introduces stranger safety in a simple and age appropriate manner, so that children are not frightened about this important topic.
During the 20 minute presentation, children are actively involved through movement, repetition, and the use of friendly puppets, while learning about the importance of stranger safety.
Elementary School Program
During the 20 minute presentation, children are actively involved through movement, repetition, and the use of friendly puppets, while learning about the importance of stranger safety.
The program is designed to increase children’s ability to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations. The presentations are conducted in individual classrooms in order to facilitate age-appropriate discussions. Presentations are 30 minutes for grades K-3rd and 40 minutes for grades 4th-5th with the focus on internet safety and the risks of online strangers.
Middle School Program
Find The Children’s highly trained speakers visit middle students in their grade-level classrooms for a 40 minute presentation on the following important topics:
- Personal safety on and offline
- How to avoid risky situations
- Resources that help protect children from predators
Recovery Task Force
For over 30 years, Find The Children has helped to reunite children with their families.
Find The Children is the coordinating agency for the Child Abduction Task Force, which is a multi-agency team, sponsored by the Inter-Agency Council for Child Abuse and Neglect (ICAN). Participating agencies include: the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office, the Los Angeles Police Department, FBI, Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office (Child Abduction Unit), and several community mental health agencies. The Child Abduction Task Force serves children of Los Angeles County when they are recovered from a non-family or parental abduction. The goal of the Task Force is to reduce trauma to victim children and their families by referring them to a therapist who is highly trained in the child recovery and reunification process.
